Why do you need two types PNG and JPEG? And what's the significant of 300DPI and 72DPI?
PNG vs JPG
Let me cut the chase and explain this as simple as possible. With PNG you've got an alpha channel which you can use with other graphics design (banners, leaflet, etc) and it will blend harmoneously. While JPG only support flat or gradient backgrounds.
Look at the sample below. PNG (on the right) blends well with the background. While with JPG you need to alter the background -which might not be your expertise.

300dpi vs 72dpi
Well, 300dpi (dots per inches) you will get a sharper quality picture, because the pictures contains 300 dots of information (colours) in a single inch. While 72dpi only consist of 72 dots of information in an inch. Therefore 300dpi are in higer resolution.
However for any web use, 72dpi is sufficient and actually highly recommended. 300dpi is meant for print and it is a bigger file. So don't put a 300dpi image up on web, it might hog your page download time.
